Who We Are

Look beyond the smile

#4Tom was set up after the death of our son in March 2019; Tom was 22 and took his own life through suicide. His death deeply shocked our family and the local community, raising questions about the complexities of mental health in young people – particularly as Tom presented as a happy young man who was popular, funny, handsome and with a family who loved him dearly.

We decided to set up a charity in Tom’s memory to help other young people suffering from anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts and substance misuse causing mental health issues. We aim to raise awareness of mental health issues caused by substance misuse, particularly cocaine, to reduce the stigma and encourage open conversations.

Get Help Now

You are not alone and there are many sources of help to provide a safe path to choosing life. Your thoughts and feelings are not permanent and there are lots of coping mechanisms to help you.

If you are having thoughts of suicide:

1

Distract yourself and remove yourself from the situation

2

Walking can help clear your mind; do something that will comfort you

3

Do not be by yourself – find someone you trust to be with; phone one of the helplines below

4

Seek medical help immediately. You can phone your GP, and if it is out of hours you will be directed to an out of hours service. In case of an emergency go to A&E or call 999.

5

Remember that these feelings will pass, nothing is permanent.

If you are concerned about someone:

1
Ask them directly if they are thinking about suicide

They may need someone to start the conversation for them, which shows they have the permission to talk about it with you.

2
A caring conversation is vital

Listen and be non-judgemental

3
Make sure they are not left alone

Disable a plan by removing anything that could be used to take their own life

4
If you think someone is at risk of suicide and they are missing and uncontactable

Immediately call 999, report it as a welfare check and explain your concerns

5
Share your concerns with others

Do not be afraid to involve their family, friends, colleagues etc.

You do not have to feel this way, there are always other options.
